Seminar paper from the year 2011 in the subject English - Pedagogy, Didactics, Literature Studies, grade: 1,7, Friedrich-Alexander University Erlangen-Nuremberg (Lehrstuhl Fremdsprachendidaktik), course: Seminar "Young Adult Fiction", language: English, abstract: Teaching English as a foreign language means a great challenge which would certainly be answered by all English teachers in the affirmative. Today every school in Germany offers English as school subject, even the primary schools. Consequently it must be put great emphasis on teaching it accurately by taking into consideration any aspect of English language acquisition when learning it, for example the acquisition of a distinctive vocabulary, the ability to use grammar rules correctly, the ability to spell correctly, the ability to understand what is been said when native speakers talk in English which we call listening comprehension. Another very important part of learning English as a foreign language is undisputedly reading comprehension. The ability to read out correctly, to understand what is been read and to be able to work with a text effectively is not only a competence that should be concentrated on in the foreign language but also in the mother tongue. The PISA Study is a perfect proof of this which will be mentioned later on. In this paper I will try to accentuate the importance and significance of reading in the English class. In order to illustrate this I will introduce the novel A Thousand Splendid Suns by Khaled Hosseini, an American author and doctor with Afghan origins, and use it for the elaboration of the importance of reading activities in the English class. Initially I will focus on the didactic analysis which includes the reference to the syllabus. The syllabus is of course the signpost in terms of guidelines when planning the lessons, choosing age-appropriate media and methods. What role does reading play in this context? What is said in the syllabus when it comes to reading? The next step would be to explain why I have chosen A Thousand Splendid Suns in this context. For what reason I am of the opinion that it can be read in the grade and school given below. I also focus on the topics that can be made use of in class when working with the novel, which aspects given in the text could be used to discuss it with pupils. Then the novel will be summarized in short by also taking into account the author's vita in short to have a better understanding of what is important in the usage of the book.

An orientation on values seems to be increasingly important these days, especially in the working environment. The call for orientation and deceleration is getting louder while (working-)complexity increases. This dissertation will demonstrate the fact that a value-oriented mindset is of great importance for ones professional action, particularly in terms of the challenges in modern working world. The value of mindfulness is thereby given an important role.Object of observation are the course participants of TEAM BENEDIKT, a provider of management seminars, situated in Würzburg. The orientation on values and

Seminar paper from the year 2002 in the subject American Studies - Literature, grade: 1,3 (A), Friedrich-Alexander University Erlangen-Nuremberg (American Studies), course: Edgar Allan Poe, 21 entries in the bibliography, language: English, abstract: "The Masque of the Red Death" first appeared in May 1842 in Graham's Magazine. It is generally grouped together with three other of Poe's stories, namely "King Pest", which first appeared in the Southern Literary Messenger in September 1835, "The Cask of Amontillado", published in Godey's Magazine and Lady's Book 33 in 1846, and "Hop-Frog", published in The Flag of Our Union in 1849. Since all these stories take place dur-ing the carnival season, they are called "The Masquerades".In her book "The Life and Works of Edgar Allan Poe. A Psycho-Analytic Interpretation", Marie Bonaparte takes a Freudian approach to Poe's stories, Sigmund Freud himself wrote the preface, and claims that all the above tales are connected to Poe's father com-plex [Bonaparte, 507]. In her interpretation of "The Masque of the Red Death", the figure of the Red Death is an incorporation of the father who returns to punish the son. This is just one reading of the story. Much has been published about "The Masque of the Red Death", one of Poe's most read tales. Scholars have tried to find its roots, like Burton R. Pollin, who assumes that Poe used his own "Shadow - A Parable" as a source for "The Masque of the Red Death". Others attempted to compare the story of Prince Prospero and his followers to other great works of art, for example Christopher Brown, who saw parallels between "The Masque of the Red Death" and Henry James's The Portrait of a Lady. A lot of research has also been done on the narrator of the tale - I will only elabo-rate on the most plausible theories on who it is that is telling this tale. Equally important, "The Masque of the Red Death" is said to contain one of the most exact definitions of the grotesque in the literary sense. Finally, as almost all of Poe's tales, "The Masque of the Red Death", too, contains an in-credible amount of symbolism. Everything from the significance of blood over the impor-tance of the number seven in mysticism to the meaning of colors can be traced in this tale, which must also be read as an allegory and a memento mori.

Are GDP/GNP appropriate measures of development?

Seminar paper from the year 2005 in the subject Politics - International Politics - Topic: Development Politics, grade: 2.0, Friedrich-Alexander University Erlangen-Nuremberg (Institut für Politische Wissenschaft), course: Introduction to Development Studies, 12 entries in the bibliography, language: English, abstract: One of the most important questions of development politics is what development actually means and how you can measure it. Although nobody will seriously dispute the fact that development has an important political dimension it is usually the economy which is in the focus of multinational organizations as for example the IMF or the Worldbank. The most important indicator for economic prosperity is the Gross Domestic Product (GDP) respectively the GNP which is a close relative. In fact the Worldbank defines developing countries as 'countries with low or middle levels of GNP per capita' (Worldbank Glossary). This shows the tremendous importance the GNP has for the work of the Worldbank. In the following essay the value of the GDP as an indicator for development will be assessed. It will be shown that it is a valuable indicator under certain conditions, but that it is clearly not sufficient to make sound statements about the development of a certain country. In fact it can even be misleading in some respects and dividing between developing and developed countries just on the basis of the GNP is certainly not appropriate. At first I will explain what GDP, GNP and its growth rates actually mean and what they can tell about the economy of a state. The specific advantages of this indicator will be mentioned and the correlations between it and development. Then I will oppose that with the great variety of problems the GDP and similar indicators have. As a conclusion I will show that for a fairly acceptable measurement of development it will be necessary to include some other indicators beside the GDP as well. Development is more than a high level of economic activity it also includes the general standard of living and the degree of personal freedom and security. The GDP is defined as the value of the final goods and services produced in a country in one year (Mankiw 2001: 522). This value is usually given in US-Dollar and equals the total amount of all sorts of official income and profits and also the sum of the total consumption, investment, government puchases and net exports in a country in a year. The difference between GDP und GNP, the Gross National Product, is that the GNP measures the value which was produced by the citizens of a country, wherever they live and work. That means for example that the profit a British company made in a developing country contributes to the GDP of the developing country but not to its GNP but to the GNP of the United Kingdom.
